A Visitor's Guide to Nokt: Overview: Overview of Nokt
Nokt is a city that has grown in spurts, and the general arrangement of the city bears this out. Prior to the Great Illithid War, Nokt was a reasonably small town when compared to the cities back in Taggartia, but still large enough to comfortably defend itself from the dangers that often came out of the wilds of Ereland.
The city consists of several “rings,” each one being added to the city core as the city grew and changes needed to be made. The original city, now called “Old Town,” is a small core of stone buildings with cramped streets, a generous central marketplace, a few prestigious eating and drinking establishments, a portion of the docks, and the mayor’s castle.
Immediately outside Old Town (which is a walled entity itself, with only three gates into it) is what has become MidTown, though, at the time of the War, it was simply Nokt. MidTown consists of a few large temples, some mid-level homes and businesses, and, most notably, the old magic shop of Kieran the Perturbed (see the notes on Kieran below; Kieran’s new shop, The Vulgar Unicorn, is located in Old Town). MidTown was in the process of being walled at the start of the Great War, and the project was finished just as the War began.
Outside the walls of MidTown are the original farms of Nokt, which provided the foodstuffs for the town pre-War. After the war, these farms began to become overworked as the population boomed, and something had to be done.
The solution was to parcel out new lands outside of the newest “ring” of Nokt, which is currently called New Town. New Town is a non-walled cluster of homes just outside of the original farm zone, where the overflow from Old Town and Mid Town began to put down roots and build homes. New Town and the newly-parceled out farmlands mingle together, and the growth continues as more and more people come to Nokt – stories from the war still draw people to this place, even twenty years after...
