A Visitor's Guide to Nokt: Outside of Nokt: The Wyyvern Riders of Unan Tet

To the south and east of Nokt, across a great many leagues, the central mountain range of Ereland plays host to an organization called The Wyvern Riders of Unan Tet (oo-NAHN teht). This enigmatic group joined with the forces of Ereland late in the Illithid War, and their appearance was much welcomed by all involved. Potent allies to have, the Wyvern Riders were the deciding factor in at least two battles during the war, and in innumerable scouting raids throughout.

Led by the powerful Unan Tet (human Ftr11/Clr5), the Wyvern Riders have also adopted his name as the title for their base of operations - a collection of mountain aeries, each housing four wyverns and their riders, and a central citadel where the riders gather for meetings, meals, and carousing. None of these fortifications are accessible from the ground; if you can't fly to Unan Tet, then you are not worthy of notice in their eyes.

Unan Tet is a vicious warrior and wields priest-like powers to boot, though he holds allegiance to no deity in particular - instead, he seems able to somehow "tap into" the divine power available to clerics and paladins, and casts spells directly (in game terms, Unan has access to all cleric spells of his level, but casts spontaneously as a Sorcerer does). As a side effect of his strange connection to divine power, Unan does not have the ability to turn/rebuke undead as does a regular cleric. He also wields the powerful Sword of the Eternal Hero (see details, below).

The Wyvern Riders are organized into "wings;" each wing consists of four Riders (usually Fighters, level 7 - 10) and their wyverns. Four wings make up a flight (16 Wyverns and their Riders), and one of those four wings will be a Command Wing (2 Ftr, 1 Wiz9 and a Commander (usually Ftr12)). Larger formations of Riders are uncommon, though the war commonly saw a Brace of Wyverns (four Flights make a Brace, for a total of 64 Wyverns and their Riders) take to the air.

Little is known about the Riders themselves, or their goals and ambitions. Indeed, their very existance was unknown until a chance meeting during the war led to their enlistment with the forces of Ereland; since the war, the Riders have maintained only the barest of ties with Nokt, withdrawing once again into their mountain aeries.

The Sword of the Eternal Hero

The Sword of the Eternal Hero is a +3 Flaming longsword, wielded by Unan Tet. The Sword has the unique power of keeping its wielder alive, no matter the amount of damage dealt to him. In game terms, the wielder does not age, is immune to Death From Massive Damage, does not fall unconscious at 0hp, and does not die at -10hp. For every ten points of damage taken below 0hp, the sword's wielder suffers one point of temporary Constitution damage. If the wielder's Constitution ever drops to zero, he/she falls dead, only to rise the following round as a lich - the Sword becomes the phylactry for the wielder's soul, and the transformation is instantaneous - and irreversable. Should the wielder of the Sword of the Eternal Hero (as a lich) ever go a week without posession of the Sword, the Sword releases his soul and the lich crumbles to dust.

Temporary Constitution damage caused by the Sword heals overnight. A Fortitude Savging Throw (DC17) must be made for each point lost; failure results in a permanent loss for every failed save (can be restored by casting a Restoration spell on the victim).

The sword is a double-edged longsword, and the first 1' of blade from the pommel is wickedly serrated. The pommel is capped with the image of a bearded, helmeted man's face with jewelled eyes - when the sword is functioning as a phylactry, the image changes to a human skull with gleaming jewelled eyes.
