A Visitor's Guide to Nokt: Old Town: City Guard Barracks

The Nokt City Guard Barracks are located just to the north of the Mayor’s Castle, and looks a lot like a smaller version of the Castle itself. A long, narrow building makes up the main body of this structure, and is three stories in height. A tower thirty feet wide and fifty feet tall caps the eastern end of the Barracks, and a walled-in courtyard opens towards the south, towards the Mayor’s Castle.

The Barracks are home to Alaric the Twice-Dead, and his quarters occupy fully one quarter of the main building, at the western end. Owing to his large size and unusual shape, his quarters span all three floors.

The gate to the barracks is always kept closed, and opened as patrols go in and out. Though this may seem like a tedious arrangement, Alaric has still not gotten over some of the hard-learned lessons from the Illithid War, and his security precautions are still in place.

The gate opens onto the courtyard, where the stables and smaller support buildings are. Another, smaller gate leads into the barracks themselves, with access to the tower from there. The sub-floors of the tower contain food stores, several armories, and a very deep well for a supply of fresh water – the Barracks are like a miniature fortress, and the City Guard can withstand a potential siege for quite some time.

The City Guard consists of two hundred members at all times; during times of strife, this number can be increased, though Alaric tries his best to keep expenditures of this type under control. The members of the City Guard think of themselves as a brotherhood, not just a peace-keeping body, and go out of their way to look out for each other at all times.
