A Visitor's Guide to Nokt: MidTown: The Bells of Lal
The Bells of Lal (l’ahl) refers to both a set of musical chimes and a tower in MidTown Nokt; the tower is built on the shore, just north of the Old Town wall. When the winds off the ocean are just right and blow strong enough, the chimes in the top of the Tower of Lal begin to ring – a pleasant sound able to be heard for miles. Generally, conditions are only right for the bells to ring once or twice a month (on the new or full moon). At other times, the Chimes are silent.
When the Chimes of Lal start to ring, a devotee of Lal will take a small amount of a hallucinogenic drug known only to the Order of Lal, and as soon as the drug takes effect, this devotee will begin to ring the Bells proper. Every time the bells are rung, the resulting melody played in accompaniment to the Chimes is unique. The Chimes generally sound for two to three hours, and the Bells are rung in accompaniment for as long as the Chimes ring.
While the Chimes and the Bells ring, all who hear them are immune to any Fear effects, and characters friendly to Nokt gain a +2 morale bonus to all dice rolls.
The Bells can be played independent of the Chimes sounding; if that is the case, then those who can hear the Bells only gain the +2 morale bonus.
