A Visitor's Guide to Nokt: Overview: Currency

When Nokt was founded as a colony of Nalo, they also used Nalo’s currency – a system of magically created colored glass beads and disks. This currency quickly collapsed, however, as barter and trade made their way to the forefront in the marketplace. Eventually, this also led the way for a more traditional, gold-and-silver-based system of coinage to be implemented.

After the Great Illithid War, Foerl withdrew almost completely from Ereland, further devaluing their currency. As a result of this currency devaluation, a phrase has entered common usage in Nokt, and it is used in the same way that “chicken feed” is used in today’s language: “glass beads.” A merchant might describe an estimate as “twenty gold and some glass beads,” or a beggar might ask for some glass beads (instead of “spare change”).

Since its independence, Nokt has established their own currency, and it is very much in line with the “default” currency structure as described in the PHB – with gold, silver, and copper coins making up the bulk of the currency. Trade in gemstones is rare, as there are still many people who feel that gemstones are a little too reminiscent of the glass beads of Nalo. As Nokt continues to conduct trade with Greathaven and other Taggartian-based colonies, Banker’s Notes are beginning to find their way into circulation, though acceptance is slow in coming.
